Flower Care

Lilac and Willow  is one of Sydney's best flower shops and we love flowers.

We understand the importance of caring for your cut flowers to ensure their longevity and beauty. Whether you've received a stunning bouquet or purchased flowers for yourself, following these simple tips will help you keep them fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.

1. Trim the Stems

Before placing your flowers in a vase, it's essential to trim the stems. Use a sharp pair of scissors or a floral knife to make a clean, angled cut. This will create a fresh surface for the flowers to absorb water and nutrients. We also recommend you keep your Bouquet tied so it retains its shape within your vase.

2. Remove Foliage

Remove any foliage that will be submerged in water. Leaves left below the waterline can decompose and promote bacterial growth, shortening the lifespan of your flowers. Keep only the leaves that will be above the water level.

3. Use Clean Water

Fill a clean vase fully with cold tap water - ensuring the water level is high enough that all stems are submerged in the water. Please remember not all the stems are exactly the same length.

4. Change the Water Regularly

To prevent the growth of bacteria, change the water in your vase every two to three days. Before adding fresh water, make sure to rinse the vase thoroughly to remove any residue or bacteria that may have accumulated.

5. Keep Away from Direct Sunlight and Heat

Place your vase of flowers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or drafts. Exposure to excessive heat or direct sunlight can cause the flowers to wilt and fade more quickly.

6. Remove Wilting Flowers

As flowers naturally age, some may wilt or fade faster than others. To maintain the overall appearance of your arrangement, remove any wilting flowers promptly. This will also prevent them from releasing ethylene gas, which can cause other flowers to deteriorate.

7. Enjoy and Share

Finally, take the time to enjoy the beauty of your cut flowers. Display them proudly in your home or share them with loved ones to brighten their day. Remember, flowers are a gift that brings joy and happiness, and with proper care, they can continue to do so for days to come.

At Lilac and Willow, we hope these tips help you make the most of your cut flowers. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our expert florists.
